When the catches of fish are brought to shore by the numerous fishing boats, they are auctioned at the local fish markets. It is interesting to watch the variety of fish being bid for by local traders and restaurantuers. The fish market in Calpe is also home to one of the Tourist Information Offices which offer information and maps to help people enjoy their stay. Opposite to the fish market are a number of fish restaurants serving locally caught fish and you can enjoy a meal of either an inexpensive Menu del Day (menu of the day) or something from the a la carte menu, alongside one of the attractive beaches in Calpe.

Cactuslandia or the Cactus D'Algar is located in Callosa d'en Sarria. It houses a huge variety of cacti and succulents in beautiful landscaped terracing. There are over 650 different species and over 200,000 plants which makes this the largest collection of cacti on the Costa Blanca. The care and attention lavished on the specimens by the gardeners make this a display to be enjoyed by all. Even if you are not particularly a fan of these often spiny plants, the variety and layout of the gardens make an impressive sight.

Take the road from Allosa d'En Sarria towards Tarberna and you will find the turning for the Fonts de Algar waterfalls. Buried in a jungly-green valley filled with citrus and medlar groves, the water alternates between cascades and pools, running between river banks covered with pink orleander in summer. The waterfalls are more spectacular after heavy rainfalls and all can be reached by a very pleasant walk alongside the river. Nearby to the lowest and most spectacular waterfall is a natural bathing pool. Walking shoes are recommended as the path tends to be a bit rocky.

The Cave at Benidoleig which is situated to the west of Pedreguer and on the road to Benidoleig, is a natural cave with its stalactites and stalagmites and is more than 300 yards in length. There are a great many domes, some of which rise to a height of more than 60ft. Human and animal remains have been found there which date back to more that 50,000 years ago. Many other interesting caves are to be found throughout the region, all of which are well worth a visit and can make a cooling diversion to get away from the hot summer sun.

The Fallas is a custom which goes back to the 16th century when carpenters burned puppets with caricatured features. Now it is corrupt politicians, tax officials and other scapegoats who are subjects for these satirical statues. The main place to see the Fallas is in Valencia although equally spectacular are the Fallas in Denia and to lesser degrees in other towns. This always happens on St Joseph's Day (the day of the carpenter) on the night of 19th / 20th March. These huge effigys constructed out of papier-mache and wax (some up to 40' in height) are to be seen around these towns where they are judged prior to them being set alight on the night of the 19th. At each burning, pyrotechnicians set off hundreds of firecrackers, with deafening ferocity, which go on until the early hours of the morning. A collection of some of the best, dating back over the past 50 years can be seen in Valencia's Museu Faller which also houses other memoriabilia from past Fallas.
